White Rock, the Limestones in Indiana

Limestones are the more common rocks around the whole world, purely being made by mineral calcite, a naturally occuring compound that is secreted by prehistoric marine organisms.

The calcium secreted by these organisms develop until over the next few million years. These mineral deposits are then compressed until after a few million centuries, they finally become what we know for them to be.

Limestone is currently one of the more used of the rocks in today’s age and even during the ancient times. The great pyramids of Egypt had been made from limestone. Sculptures of Greek artists and most architects of ancient times had used this media for shaping.

Nowadays, limestone has have had broadened uses in the industry of construction. The extraction of quicklime and slaked lime, extra calcium content in food, cement and mortar feed, toothpaste, soil acid neutralizer, white pigment, aggregate, glass making, base floor for petroleum reservoirs in underground caves, desulfurization and others. Limestone is probably the most used rock in all fields and industry.

Indiana boasts a good deposit of limestones in its mines, specifically in the hilly regions down South. The mines renowned for their limestone are found near Lawrence County. A lot of the important buildings around the area and in the country have had their facing done with limestone from Indiana, like the facing of the Pentagon building.

Nowadays, it’s easy to find uses for limestone in crafting. We have paperweights, wind chimes, statuettes and sculptures. Limestone can also be used for food (as mentioned) to supplement the calcium value. Limestones also make for good tiles, walls, and anything that doesn’t have to do with the rain. Because as we know, limestone reacts heavily with rain. Acid rain to be precise. As much as possible, when crafting limestone, think of an indoor use for it, and those without the exposure to moisture in any form.

Limestone is a wonderful commodity if you think about it. And far plentiful too. With proper utilization and discovery of potential for this ingredient, you may find it efficient perhaps in the near future.
